Reviews From The Crypt – THE POWER

This week in the crypt we take a look at the newest Shudder offering, THE POWER.
You can catch it on Shudder beginning Thursday, April 8th.

Set in East London 1974 a time when blackouts are being used to conserve energy, viewers are treated to a slow burn over 95 minutes that builds to a finale sure to grab their attention.

Written & directed by Corinna Faith, THE POWER follows the story of Val, a new nurse in the pediatric ward at a rough hospital. Where you keep your head down and question nothing.

Forced to work the night shift during the blackouts odd things begin to occur.

There’s really not much to say about this film without spoiling it.

What worked for me was it was beautifully shot, at times it felt like a message about mental health set in a time when most people with mental health issues were confined to hospitals. The casting was good as well, the characters were believable.

Where it fell short was the pacing. The first 45-50 minutes were build up. I’m not sure if this has a rewatchability. I didn’t hate the film, but I didn’t love it either. This film is sure to find it’s audience and should gain a semi cult following from it.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
